Everything is the other way around at the Same Time – Experiences of Home Abortion.

A presentation of texts and drawings that have emerged from arts-based research into the lived experience of four people who chose the abortion pill.

In 2023, Rianne van Hassel conducted research from her master’s degree in care ethics at UvH into the lived experience of people who choose home abortion. Part of her research was an arts-based method for which she wrote two poems, a monologue, and a song. She invited me to create felt images based on the experiences of four women, from which 52 drawings emerged. It was a mega inspiring process. During this presentation, we bring all the work together for the first time. We are very keen to present the research to give the subject more visibility, reduce stigma and contribute to conditions in which good abortion care can emerge. The presentation in Sexyland World is a try-out for a travelling exhibition through the Netherlands in 2025 that includes the work from this research. This travelling expo is an initiative of Peter Leusink.

The arts-based method Rianne applied during her research is the Apophatic method, unusual in science because it is essentially an anti-method that requires you to let go of all prior knowledge; listen openly and uninhibitedly, curiously and realise that, as a researcher or participant in the research, your own background, and experiences colour your gaze. As a result, it was an inspiring process. And it could perhaps also be an inspiring request to the audience who come to see the arts-based part of the research; perhaps to humanity, to engage in an exercise in empathy. To practise an attitude of trying to understand how someone has experienced something, to experience a form of compassion and empathy for how someone has experienced something; to look at how you yourself stand in the subject. And in the midst of that complexity, to fully acknowledge the different forms that are all there, side by side.
